Unity and Strength in the Midst of a Global Pandemic

I began working with the DoD in 2014, and have had a variety of government roles and positions since then.

Below is a piece I wrote during my time with the Recruitment Office at the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, as their Recruitment Communications Program Manager.

The article was first posted to my LinkedIn on April 15, 2020, and the original piece can be found on here: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/unity-strength-midst-global-pandemic-brittany-l-reid/

Unity and Strength in the Midst of a Global Pandemic

It is no secret that the human race is undergoing unprecedented times in the midst of the Corona Virus, or COVID-19, pandemic. COVID-19 has resulted in people experiencing grueling physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional hardships, as well as economic adversities. Across the United States, unemployment rates jumped to 4.4% in the month of March, and many of those who were laid off are struggling to find a way to make ends meet.
However, one employer whose career opportunities have remained open in the midst of this crisis, is the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, or NGA.
NGA, the premiere global provider of GEOINT, continues to serve as an Employer of Choice that passionately advocates for diversity across various ages, ethnicities, and skillsets as it works to expand and augment its world-class work force.
At the helm of it all is NGA’s leader, Director Vice Admiral Robert Sharp, who has directly kept his workforce updated on a daily-basis with the overall status of the agency, how the workforce is helping with the nationwide response to COVID-19, and the ever-shifting means by which the GEOINT family is adapting to continue executing the agency’s mission. It is clear that the Director’s aim is to keep people as safe as possible so that NGA can continue to efficiently serve its customers and protect the world. He has even taken to hosting virtual town-halls that the workforce can access from home, just to maintain contact with NGA’s employees and interactively keep everyone informed.
I appreciate the high-quality communication that Agency leadership has provided to the workforce at Vice Admiral Sharp’s direction. He has continued to send his employees uplifting words of motivation, inspiration, and encouragement as we navigate through these turbulent times. His guidance and management makes me proud to work for such a steadfast and empowering organization like NGA, which has worked tirelessly to accommodate and take care of its dedicated personnel.
Also, even though the NGA family is practicing social distancing, there has been a significant increase in the sheer amount of unity throughout the agency. It has been heartwarming for fellow colleagues to not only collaborate on essential tasks, but also to reach out and see how co-workers and their loved ones are doing. Because of this, I feel like our GEOINT family is closer than ever before.
While COVID-19 has altered how NGA conducts its operations, the agency is still serving as a strong pulse in the DOD community to strengthen the welfare of our nation. That said, those who are actively looking for jobs can navigate to https://www.intelligencecareers.gov/nga/index.html and search NGA’s job listings for new positions.
I must say, I am very fortunate to work for a federal government agency so closely tied to national security, where our response to this global pandemic can and does make a positive difference. For those who have been displaced by or are in dire financial straits due to COVID-19, please consider applying for a federal position. One will find comfort in the notion that even during a national crisis such as the COVID-19 pandemic, a federal work role will help to alleviate concerns over job security, and make things just a bit easier during these trying times.
Personally, I would like to thank all of the doctors, nurses, first responders, and other medical personnel who are on the front lines every day battling this enemy virus. Also, thank you to our military families, vendors, sanitation workers, and other key players who are dedicated to helping our country and the rest of the world get through this crisis. Thank you to our community members, our neighbors, our co-workers, and our families, for being kind, loving, and generous when we’re so distant physically, yet so united in spirit. And to you, the reader, I also extend my gratitude for everything you are doing to help slow down the spread of this virus.
Let’s continue to keep best practices: wash our hands, wear masks and gloves when necessary, social distance, and be safe. Let’s continue working together to get our planet back on track, so we can come out of this stronger and better than ever.
